Refrigerators, freezers, cooker tops: All these things are part of the basic equipment of every kitchen. But it is precisely these appliances that turn out to be real energy guzzlers when used incorrectly. As an estate agent in Tyrol for many years, I have seen a lot in both rented and owner-occupied flats and houses. In this short article, I will tell you how you can save energy in the long term.

3 energy-saving tips for the kitchen

Tip #1: Check the temperature settings of the freezer and refrigerator.

In many households, refrigerators are set too cold, which drives up electricity costs. The optimal temperature for the refrigerator is between +5 °C and +7 °C; for freezers it is -18 °C. For example, if you increase the temperature of your refrigerator from 4 °C to 6.5 °C, you can save 6 euros and 16 kg ofCO2 per year.

Tip #2: Defrost your refrigerators regularly.

You are probably familiar with ice forming in the freezer and refrigerator. As a rule, you should defrost both refrigerators at least once a year. Ideally, you should do this whenever a layer of ice forms. Because: Even a 1 centimetre thick layer of ice leads to a 10 - 15 percent increase in electricity consumption.

Tip #3: Use the right cooker top and a lid when cooking.

You can also reduce electricity costs when cooking. Your hotplates have different sizes, so use the right one for the pot of your choice. If you want to heat a large pot on a small hotplate, it will take more time and therefore more electricity.

And: actually take the saying "every pot finds its lid" to heart. If you use a lid for cooking, the heat cannot escape and you save energy again.

I hope these three tips can help you reduce energy costs in your household in the future. By the way, this is also important if you want to sell your property. Because: Potential buyers like to look at the energy costs of the previous owners. The lower they are, the more attractive your property is.
